Do you try to control life and then life has other plans for you?

Do you try to control life and then life has other plans for you?

Sep 26, 2021

Have you felt that life seemed to be going in the right direction, you have the nice house, and you and your spouse have good paying jobs and just as you have things figured out, something goes awry?

This seems to be a story that many people can relate to. I have met many people who haven't felt good about their jobs but they have been attached to the job purely for their financial security. Then they either have had a new manager come in who is not a good manager from their perspective which has forced them, after a considerable period of time of suffering and not wanting to move forward into the unknown, to look for a new job. The other case is when the person is retrenched from their job. I have also known people who have had high paying corporate careers who have ended up with serious illness because of all of the stress and long hours that have come with their job.

In all of these situations, people thought they were in control of their life and didn't see the curve ball coming. There are countless other stories and you might be thinking of a scenario that applies to you.

There are 3 reasons why these life events cause people stress and why there is a preference for control:

1. The brain is wired to control. The brain wants to expend the least amount of energy so keeps you in your comfort zone and just keep going down those well worn neural pathways that you have created over many years.

2. The ego likes to keep you safe and secure so it tricks you into thinking that the status quo of life is what you need.

3. The fear of the unknown brings up all sorts of anxiety-provoking thoughts such as how will I now pay my mortgage or the medical expenses without a job. The more time you spend in fear, the bigger the fear becomes.

What can you do about this to future proof yourself and your life?

1. Learn to go with the flow. Know that with every door closing, that a new door is going to open. Imagine that you always have an invisible safety net that keeps you safe and secure no matter what is happening. When you can come from a place of inner peace and ultimate trust in life knowing that everything is working out for you, you are in flow. Your number 1 job is to learn and grow and know that everything that's happening to you is for you to face your fears and heal.

Leap and the net will appear - John Burroughs

It's about learning to give up attachment to things. Now this doesn't mean to give up on your goals, it means to not be attached to outcomes. You allow the outcomes to unfold in the way that they want to knowing in your heart that it's all for your highest good. Attachment occurs due to fear and insecurity and detachment actually supports you achieve your goals. Detachment also brings in greater serenity and wellbeing.

2. Be brave in the face of fear. In every life situation there are a myriad of actions to take to support you sidestep your fear. You just need to relax, tune into your creativity and know that you have a ton of inner strength and resources to pull you through. Life gives you situations that you can handle.

So now you can cultivate more peace in life by letting go of the need to control and looking for the infinite possibilities that are there for you at all times. Follow your intuition and take inspired action to create the life you want. Be ok with endings and if something or someone wants to leave your life.
