Discover what motivates you at work with these 9 factors and how to increase motivation

Mar 06, 2022

Do you know what motivates you? Many people haven’t thought about what motivates them. What motivates you is unique to you. It’s helpful to identify what motivates you so you can create more of it in your life.

Rank the following 9 factors from highest to lowest to identify what motivates you:

  • Performance and achievement: this can include completing work within a deadline, solving a challenging problem or seeing positive results from your work.
  • Recognition: receiving praise and recognition for your work achievements.
  • Job-status: the authority/status that comes with a job e.g. manager.
  • Responsibility: increase in responsibilities and the authority to make decisions.
  • Opportunities for advancement: the upward movement into a new position or a sideways movement to learn new skills and broader business knowledge.
  • Growth: learning and mastering skills.
  • The work itself: the challenge in the job and interesting work.
  • Contribution: wanting to contribute to something greater than yourself as it brings fulfilment e.g. sustainability or charity.
  • Money: many people are driven by material aspects, however, it doesn’t lead to fulfilment. Normally, people need to dig deeper to find out what motivates them.

What are strategies to lift your motivation levels?

  1. Once you have identified your top 3 motivators from above. Write down how your job is meeting your motivators.
  2. Write down actions you can take to improve your motivation.
  3. Does your manager know what motivates you? If not, organise a meeting to let your manager know. Your manager can support you with strategies to align your work with your motivators and look for development opportunities.
  4. Assess your energy levels. On a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high), how would you rate your mood/energy level? To increase your energy levels, ensure you are eating healthy, getting regular exercise and meditating. Consider whether you need some time out to recharge your batteries.
  5. Tune into your spiritual guidance to help you. This requires you to put aside your ego, get still and listen to what your inner guidance tells you. Surrender and trust that the universe will lead the way. When you receive inspired action then follow through.
  6. Hire a coach to help you connect more deeply with your talents, motivations and keep you accountable for your actions. If you want to align your life with your life purpose, then book a Life Purpose Briefing with me.

When you are feeling motivated, your brain produces chemicals and hormones that will help your transformation. However, when you are disinterested, tired or working on trivial things the brain switches off the change functions. Ensure you focus and do the things that motivate you because you will build more neural pathways around those things. Your brain will support you and encourage you to continue to do that.
