Do you want to stress less at work and live more? Let's look at Innercise - Part 1

Dec 26, 2021

Are you tired of working hard to achieve mediocre results and feeling continuously exhausted? Then you’ll want to learn about Innercise, a process that is essentially a workout for your brain.

John Assaraf is the CEO of NeuroGym, brain researcher, serial entrepreneur and author of the book INNERCISE: The New Science to Unlock Your Brain’s Hidden Power and I’m providing a review of this book. This is Part 1. Learn about this brain hack and stress management technique that you can easily apply to your daily life.

I’ve been interested in neuroscience for 10 years and I enjoy adding many practices to my daily routine and experiencing the benefits. I started Innercising in the last 3 years and notice how it is very empowering and can support creating a more joy-filled life. One long-lasting benefit is how it supports a positive mindset and is a stress management technique that can help people in their studies or at work.

What are Innercises?

According to the author, it’s “science-based techniques that help you unlock your brain’s hidden powers, so you can take inspired action to achieve your goals faster and easier than ever before…Each one is like an exercise for your brain.”

Innercises help to retrain your subconscious mind to be in coherence with your conscious mind which helps you get from where you are to where you want to be and break free from behaviours that are limiting your full potential.

Is it easy or hard to achieve your goals?

John explains that setting goals are easy, however, achieving goals is hard for several reasons. One of those reasons is the brain has two priorities, i) safety and ii) energy conservation.

A part of your brain called the Amygdala, a tiny almond-shaped part of the brain, is a less evolved primitive part of the brain that causes the fight, flight or freeze response. This part of your brain hasn’t evolved much, it focuses on keeping you safe from threats and continuously trapped in your comfort zone. Learning how to reduce the impact and control of this part of the brain is very helpful. It often is too switched on / overactive for what is necessary for our modern life.

The brain also wants to conserve energy so when we want to make a change in our life, it will sabotage our efforts by keeping us stuck in the habits and behaviours that are already well embedded.

In addition to this everything has to go through your subconscious mind to ensure it doesn’t upset your comfort zone. This means that if your subconscious mind isn’t aligned with what you are wanting to achieve with your conscious goals, then achieving your goals won’t happen and you’ll continue to remain stuck. An example is that you want a promotion or pay rise, however, you find yourself procrastinating and putting off learning a new skill that would help you achieve it.

Trying harder and working longer is not the answer to this conundrum and many people have fallen into the trap of thinking that is the only way. The only direction you will be headed is to more stress and burnout. So you want to work on training your subconscious mind to do what you want and Innercising is the key. Why is this important? According to the book:

The subconscious wields so much power that it is one of the key reasons why achieving goals is an uphill battle. John Assaraf refers to the subconscious mind as the Gorilla.

So what can you do? Neuroplasticity, the ability to adjust your old patterns, beliefs and habits, becomes your weapon to tame this big beast. Innercise helps you to achieve your goals.

A main component and focus for Innercising are three core neuro muscles critical for success, what are they?

1. Awareness: This is critical because it refers to building self-awareness and when you become conscious or an observer of a pattern or belief, it offers up more choice for you to do something that serves you and that’s when the next step comes in.

2. Intention: Once you are aware of more choices, you can decide if you want something different or more of the same.

3. Action: When you take action towards your goals, you have more chances to be successful. Taking action also brings in the opportunity to learn.

John Assaraf goes into depth in the book on each of these neuro muscles and has created an Innercise to support it.

How do your habits impact your success?

You can have disempowering habits that are blocking you from success and achieving your goals. So it’s helpful if you create new empowering habits and there are three ways you can form a new habit according to behavioural psychologists and covered in the book:

1. The trigger

2. The behaviour

3. The reward.

In addition, research shows it takes anywhere from 66 to 365 days to form a new habit so another reason why utilising Innercises will fast track your results. John has dedicated chapter 6 to habits and includes examples such as how he overcame his sugar addiction with Innercise.

As you can see there are many reasons why we need support with change and how stressful it can be when we are not seeing any progress. This is why it’s so helpful to find effective practices to add to your daily ritual so you can live your best life. No wonder coaching is such a booming industry because it’s a key way that people can make changes and uplevel their success.
