Agape - Unconditional Love

Agape - Unconditional Love

Feb 14, 2020

It’s Valentine’s Day on 14 February and how does that make you feel? Hopefully, you can see that at its core it’s a day to celebrate love and we need more love in the world.

Some people don’t feel their best on Valentine’s Day for a variety of reasons and I get it, I’ve been there before. The most common reasons are because you are single, your partner/spouse isn’t interested in celebrating it and the consumerism that surrounds it.

What it boils down to though is if we can peel back the layers and look at its core, it is the celebration of love and that’s a very good thing as we need more love in the world and the energy of love is always available to us. It is, however, easy to push away the energy of love particularly when we are not filling ourselves up from the inside and constantly looking for love to show up externally.

My view is that in modern times there is an enormous focus on romantic love. That’s understandable, it’s where we experience great joys and pain and suffering and we need help in navigating our romantic relationships.

Let’s explore love further and look at the four types of love described by the Ancient Greek philosophers:

1. Agape, the purest of all love, unconditional love;

2. Eros, meaning passionate love, physical desire and attraction;

3. Philia, for friendships and compassionate love for others; and

4. Storge, for the natural bonds between family members.

I want to focus on Agape and here are 3 actions you can take to embody unconditional love today.

i) Love everyone without judgement. Drop the judgements about others and what they did or didn’t do, just let it be, not trying to do anything about it or pushing it away. Just allow and accept them, all of them including their apparent failings.

ii) Giving to someone generously without the need or expectation for anything in return. This could be a physical gift or giving your time.

iii) Do a meditation where you send light and love out from you to the whole world and for every sentient being to experience an increase in love.

How about setting a new theme song for your unconditional love day? The power of music to uplift is tremendous. Song suggestions include “I just called to say I love you” by Stevie Wonder or something more upbeat like “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis.

I hope that you revel in the energy of love that is transmitted today as people around the globe celebrate. I was in Manila, the Philippines for Valentine’s Day in 2019 and wow the energy of love was massive.

Love is the answer.

Go ahead and take action today, this is a great gift to you and welcomes in more love.
